"Είναι εντάξει να είσαι περήφανος που είσαι Γερμανός. Αυτή είναι μια πολύ σημαντική αρχή... είναι καλό να είσαι περήφανος για τη γερμανική κουλτούρα, τις γερμανικές αξίες και να μην το χάσεις αυτό σε κάποιου είδους πολυπολιτισμικότητα που αραιώνει τα πάντα."
"Νομίζω ότι θέλουμε να έχουμε μοναδικούς πολιτισμούς στον κόσμο. Θέλουμε να έχουμε ανθρώπους που... δεν θέλουμε να είναι όλα ίδια παντού, όπου είναι μόνο ένα μεγάλο είδος σούπας", πρόσθεσε.
Στη συνέχεια ο Μασκ αναφέρθηκε στο αίσθημα της ιστορικής ενοχής για τα εγκλήματα του Τρίτου Ράιχ που καθόρισαν τη Γερμανία από την ήττα της κατά τον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.
«Νομίζω ότι υπάρχει... ειλικρινά, υπερβολική εστίαση στις ενοχές του παρελθόντος και πρέπει να προχωρήσουμε πέρα από αυτό», είπε. «Άνθρωποι, τα παιδιά δεν πρέπει να είναι ένοχα για τις αμαρτίες των γονιών τους, πόσο μάλλον οι παππούδες και οι γιαγιάδες τους, ακόμη και οι προπάππους τους, και θα πρέπει να είμαστε αισιόδοξοι και ενθουσιασμένοι για το μέλλον της Γερμανίας».
Ο Βάιντελ γιόρτασε την ομιλία στο Χ, δηλώνοντας, "Κάνε ξανά την Αμερική και τη Γερμανία σπουδαία!"
Οι δηλώσεις του Μασκ χαιρετίστηκαν από επευφημίες από το πλήθος. Έγιναν λιγότερο αποδεκτοί από τους διεθνείς κριτικούς.
«Τα λόγια που ακούσαμε από τους βασικούς συντελεστές της συγκέντρωσης του AfD για τη «Μεγάλη Γερμανία» και «την ανάγκη να ξεχάσουμε τη γερμανική ενοχή για τα ναζιστικά εγκλήματα» ακούγονταν πολύ οικεία και δυσοίωνα. Ειδικά λίγες μόνο ώρες πριν από την επέτειο της απελευθέρωσης του Άουσβιτς», δήλωσε ο Πολωνός πρωθυπουργός Ντόναλντ Τουσκ .
Το AfD θεωρείται ευρέως δεξιό ή περιθωριακό κόμμα. Χαρακτηρίζεται κυρίως από τη στάση της κατά της μετανάστευσης, η οποία έχει κερδίσει επαίνους μεταξύ των Γερμανών που είναι απογοητευμένοι από το μεταναστευτικό σύστημα της χώρας. Έχει σημειώσει άνοδο στις δημοσκοπήσεις φέτος, κερδίζοντας τις πρώτες της εκλογές τον Σεπτέμβριο στο πρώην κομμουνιστικό κρατίδιο της Θουριγγίας.
Εν όψει των πρόωρων εκλογών στη Γερμανία στις 23 Φεβρουαρίου, που προκλήθηκαν από την κατάρρευση της κυβέρνησης συνασπισμού υπό την ηγεσία του κυβερνώντος Σοσιαλδημοκρατικού Κόμματος, ο Μασκ έριξε την υποστήριξή του πίσω από το ανανεωμένο κόμμα.
Το AfD έχει αυξηθεί σε δημοτικότητα από τότε που η πρώην καγκελάριος Άνγκελα Μέρκελ αποφάσισε να δεχθεί μεγάλο αριθμό Σύριων προσφύγων το 2015. Αν και το κόμμα έχει εμφανιστεί στις δημοσκοπήσεις από το 2015, ήταν πάντα αποκλεισμένο από την κυβέρνηση λόγω μιας " Brandmauer», ή «firewall», μια συμφωνία μεταξύ όλων των μεγάλων κομμάτων ότι δεν θα συνεργαστούν με το AfD, θεωρώντας το ως πολύ ακραίο.
Αυτό θα μπορούσε να αλλάξει τον Φεβρουάριο, καθώς το κόμμα κατέλαβε τη δεύτερη θέση στις δημοσκοπήσεις με 20% — πάνω από το κυβερνών κόμμα SPD. "Το τείχος προστασίας έπεσε!" Ο Βάιντελ δήλωσε θριαμβευτικά στο Χ μετά τη συνέντευξη.
Η ακριβής ετικέτα του Κόμματος AfD είναι από μόνη της πηγή διαμάχης. Οι αριστεροί κριτικοί την κατηγορούν ανοιχτά ως νεοναζιστική ομάδα.

Άλλοι αναλυτές έχουν μια πιο διαφοροποιημένη άποψη, απεικονίζοντας το κόμμα ως συνασπισμό διαφορετικών ευρέως δεξιών ιδεολογικών φατριών.
