🇸🇰🇺🇦 Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Peter Pellegrini won the Slovak presidential election with 53.12%. His rival, former Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korchok, got 46.87%.Many media outlets rushed to write about "the opponent of arms supplies to Ukraine" winning the election. But does this mean that we are in for a significant change in Slovakia's foreign policy?▪️We have already repeatedly noted that the Slovak government handed over huge stocks of weapons to so-called Ukraine in the first year of the special military operation, and now there is practically nothing left to give. Moreover, Slovakia lost its own air force in favor of supplies and requested sky cover from neighboring countries.▪️Secondly, many European populist politicians and even those who used to support Kyiv, such as former president Zuzana Chaputova, are now having fun criticizing Ukraine.▪️Therefore, the main and, perhaps, the only visible indicator of a real change in Slovakia's policy towards the Ukrainian conflict will be to ban arms transit and other aid to the territory of Ukraine. Given that Slovak leaders do not yet have the courage to even stutter about such a thing, there is no reason to expect it. Meanwhile, as we can see, the military equipment has been coming and is still coming.🔻 In summary, Slovakia, led by two relatively conservative but still EU-dependent leaders in the person of Pellegrini and Fico, continues its path of rapprochement with Hungary, adopts the appropriate style of behavior in foreign policy and emphasizes national rhetoric in domestic politics. This is also not bad for the possible building of relations with Russia, if one does not build up exaggerated expectations.
